In October 2010, Tony was diagnosed with ALS. I think it shocked everyone, myself included. Working in the medical field, I was familiar with how ALS affected not only the patient, but also family and friends. At first I wasn’t sure how to react- I was saddened, I was afraid, I was angry. It took me a while before I knew what to say to my uncle. When I finally talked to him about it, I realized that my tio was the strongest man I had ever met. Although he knew the prognosis, he met his challenges head-on.
My cousin, Andrea Vigil Carberry, was getting a group together to run a half marathon in the Fall. The team name was “Team Tio- Legs for ALS”. This became Tony’s team. Family and friends have joined this team to show support for Tony, and to bring awareness to this horrible disease. Tony never gave up, he fought, he showed unbelievable courage and determination. On August 19, 2012 Leonard “Tony” Vigil left this life as he lived it….With Grace and Dignity.
